I'm interested in buying/renting a slip. What is my next step?

Whether you are investing in a PHYC slip or renting one for the season, all you need to do before bringing in your vessel is:

A) Fill out our PHYC Application & Information Worksheet here on the website.  Paper copies are also available at the PHYC Office.

B) Provide the PHYC Staff with a copy of your current Vessel Insurance Policy.

C) Provide payment.

It's that simple!

What is the PHYC Application & Information Worksheet?

It is simply our way of collecting important information from you. We ask that our current boaters renew it each year, and new boaters fill one out before coming in. The biggest reason we do this is in the unlikely event of an emergency.  To fill out your PHYC Application & Information Worksheet, click Here.

What is a dockominium?

A dockominium is an owner’s association for a marina. It operates in much the same way a condominium does; there are Common Elements, association dues, etc.

Do I have to buy a slip to keep my vessel at PHYC?

No. You can rent one directly from our Association, or you can rent from one of our current unit owners.

Does PHYC have transient slips?

You bet! Check here for details, and then give our office a call at (262)697-3200 to reserve your spot.

How do I get to PHYC by land?

From Illinois, take I-94 north just over the WI/IL border and exit onto Hwy 165. Head east on 165 until you get to Sheridan Rd. Turn right and head south on Sheridan for a bit until you get to 116th St. Watch out – 116th St has no stop signs or stoplights! Look for the Wooden Nickel bar on the corner. Turn left onto 116th St and head east. After the railroad tracks, turn right on 1st Ct and head south. You will come to the PHYC sign. Hang a left, approach the gate, and give us a call at (262)697-3200 so we can open the gate for you.

If you are coming from an area too close to use I-94, take Sheridan Rd. towards the WI/IL border. Just north of the border is 116th St. Take 116th St east over the railroad tracks to 1st Ct. Are there restaurants and other businesses within walking distance?

There are several local businesses that are accessible via the Harbor Shuttle. The shuttle does not have a regularly scheduled stop at Prairie Harbor – just call the Winthrop Harbor Shuttle dispatch, and they will arrange for the shuttle to pick you up!

Does PHYC have a pump out service?

Yes.  Once a week, our staff makes the rounds.  If your pump out card is "red side up," we'll pump your head.  This is a free service PHYC offers both our unit owners and unit renters.

Does PHYC allow pets?

Yes.  For the safety and respect of your fellow boaters, we ask that your pet be kept on a leash at all times.  All pets must be up to date on their vaccinations, and must be registered with PHYC.  Stop by the office to complete the Pet Registration Form.

Why isn't the American Flag the highest on the flag pole?

"On yacht club and other waterfront flagpoles, the ensign (American Flag) is flown from a gaff below the yacht club's burgee, which is flown from the top of the flagpole.  While this arrangement, may appear to be disrespectful, it reflets traditional usage on gaff-rigged sailing vessels where the ensign (American Flag) is flown off the gaff and the burgee or private signal of the owner is flown at the masthead."

Rousmaniere, John. "Flag Etiquette." The Annapolis book of seamanship . 2nd rev. ed. New York, N.Y.: Simon and Schuster, 1989. 367. Print.

The following provisions are made for the display of the flag on a mast located on yacht club grounds.
Chapman Piloting:Seamanship and Small Boat Handling, American Book-Stratford Press, Inc., New York, NY

Mast with a Yard and Gaff:
• U.S. Ensign (flag) is flown at the gaff (#2).
• Club burgee (flag) is flown at the truck (#1).
• Flags at #3 and #4 vary depending on the activity at the club. (State Flags)

It is display #3 which causes the most confusion. This puts the club burgee in a higher position physically, but not above that of the U.S. Ensign (flag) symbolically. By the normal Flag Code provisions, this would seem to be an incorrect display. The tradition of the seas, however, is to hold the gaff as the position of honor; thus, the intent of this tradition and display is to give proper respect to the flag.
